Dressing up is an amusing part of childhood. It’s the chance to be someone else for the day and really let our imaginations run wild, at a time when we have yet to develop the inhibitions that can limit us later in life. Costumes can be just as fun for parents too- after all there’s nothing quite as cute as seeing your little one in full fireman or princess garb!
If you’re looking for fancy dress ideas or need a specific costume, we’ve got some great ideas as well as good practical advice.
Keep it Simple – And Comfortable
Choosing the right fancy dress really depends on what your child will be doing and how long he or she will be wearing their costume. Due to the weather it is great to be able to dress them up in something they can play in, or something that doesn’t require too much effort.
You can easily put together a cowboy or cowgirl costume with jeans, a checked shirt, bandana and hat. Create a fun girly kitty with little more than black tights, a black leotard or dress, head band with ears and a black nose.
Other comfortable and easy fancy dress ideas include mummies (simply wrap white pyjamas in strips of white fabric), pirates with swords, tattered clothing and an eye patch and a ninja with black clothing and a ski mask.
Take Things up a Notch
If you’ve got more time you can take your child’s fancy dress up a notch. Create painted butterfly wings or paint a cardboard box to match your child’s favourite box of sweets. You can make a fun lion’s mane out of yarn or wings out of false feathers.
The internet is chock-full of step by step ideas to help guide you in the making of simple or very complex designs.
Buy a Costume Online
If you are able to anticipate your child’s need for a costume you can also order one in advance. Companies like The Kids Window offer a full range of fancy dress ideas for any occasion. Ebay is also a great place to look. Many costumes are worn just once before being professionally cleaned and then put up for sale.
Smart parents will tell you that it always pays to think ahead- finding out your child has to dress up the next day can put your evening into a tail spin. When you have a chance, order a few different options of fancy dress so you’re never left unprepared.
Think of the upcoming seasons so you can plan accordingly- ducklings and bunnies for Spring, for example, and then elves for Christmas.

Costume Exchanges
Part of the beauty of having friends with children of all ages is that each likely has a few costumes in their wardrobe. Save your child’s outfits and ask friends to do the same. You can then do a fancy dress exchange or at least know whom to call if you need to borrow one.
