How to Recognize a Mommy-Friendly Employer

We all know that being a mom is the most difficult job in the world. By far. It is not even close. That being said, for many a mom, there comes a time when she wants to get back to her career after spending some time with her young ones. When such a time comes, it is important to be smart about your new employer because not every company is as mommy-friendly as it should be. In the perfect world this would be the case, but, unfortunately, our world is far from perfect.

Start with Employee Benefits

Different companies offer different employee benefits and it is only logical that some of them are more mommy-friendly than others. This is often the result of a rather random approach to employee benefits, while it can sometimes be a conscious effort on the part of the company to provide parents and future parents with the best benefits packages for them.

Of course, it will start with the maternity leave, as some companies are far more generous when it comes to time off for new moms. For mothers who do not plan on more children, some other benefits and perks might be even more important. For example, family-friendly teambuilding and events, family-friendly environment, various m oney-related benefits that can help moms and their families cover child care costs if needed.

Flexibility

If there is one thing all moms will agree on when work is in question, it is that flexibility means more than anything else. And this is not asking for too much.

This is simply asking that we do not have to ask for forgiveness for being 10 minutes late because our child had to go for a doctor's appointment. This is being able to work from home on those days when the little ones are particularly ill. This is being treated like an adult and not like an automaton of some kind.
If a company's management is notorious for its strict enforcement of some antiquated workplace norms, you might want to look elsewhere. There are plenty more companies that understand the modern mom and her needs.

A Lot of Other Mommies

Every company has a culture that pervades it, either intentionally or as a natural state of things. More often than not, it has to do with the people who work there. For instance, in a video game development studio that features a 20-something male CEO and 4 other male "around 20" developers, the culture will most likely not be exactly family-friendly.

(This is nothing against 20-something male video game developers.)

This is why it is always a good idea to check out if other moms work for a company you have your eye on. Check out their About Us website page, ask around, have a sneaky snoop around when you go in for an interview. Be resourceful and try to find out if other moms work there.

If there are more than a few moms working at the company, it is highly likely that this company promotes a family-friendly culture where company outings include families and where it is not unimaginable for employees' children to spend a few hours on company grounds.
In addition to this, you might want to talk to the mommies already working there and find out what kind of a treatment you can expect.

Closing Word

It is not easy getting back on that career horse and a smart mom will avoid companies and employers that do not understand how difficult it is to be a mom.

Luckily, there are still plenty of companies out there that are family friendly.

You only need find them.
