Late or irregular bedtimes have been found to cause problems for children.

The study, which excluded children with ADHD, Asperger syndrome and autism, found kids with late or irregular bedtimes displayed hyperactivity, behavioural problems, emotional difficulties and problems with peers as they got older.

However, the research conducted at University College London also found that children who switched to a more regular bedtime showed improvements in behaviour and development.

“Not having fixed bedtimes, accompanied by a constant sense of flux, induces a state of body and mind akin to jet lag and this matters for healthy development and daily functioning,” says Prof Yvonne Kelly (UCL).

The survey found one-tenth of seven-year-olds were in bed before 7:30pm and a quarter went between then and 8pm, while 9% didn’t go to bed until after 9pm.

Enforcing a bedtime schedule can be tough for busy, tired parents but here are some tips that can make the process a little easier.
