That summer holiday that you and your family have been waiting for all year round, is finally here. However, in and amongst all the excitement of going away on holiday, the importance of your family’s safety and well-being could not be given the attention it deserves. Here are just a few pointers of how to keep your children safe on holiday…

Sun cream
Whether you’re going on holiday abroad, or opting for a staycation in the UK, it is absolutely essential that you use sun cream when exposed to the sun.According to statistics, 40% of parents aren’t using sun block on their families in UK holiday because many parents believe that the UK sun is less damaging than the sun overseas, when actually this is far from the case. While UK summers might not be as scorching hot as say a holiday in sunny Spain, the sun can still be just as damaging to you and your families skin. So, make sure you apply plenty of high factor sun cream regularly (especially after swimming and towel drying) to avoid any kind of sun damage, wherever you might be holidaying in the world.

Regular breaks from the sun
Even if you regularly apply a high factor sunscreen, it should not be used as an excuse to stay in the sun all day. It is important to make sure that you and your family take regular breaks from the sun, particularly between the hours of 11am and 3pm when the sun is at its hottest.
If your children are hard to drag away from playing and activities, then make sure that you schedule lunch right in the middle of this period to give you and your family a good break from the sunshine for a decent period of time. It is also a good idea to take your children out of the heat completely, to really let them cool down. For instance, allow them to have an afternoon nap in a nice, cool room with air conditioning to get their body temperature back to normal (remember the heating and cooling process for young infants is very different to an adult and they are much more likely to overheat up to five times more quickly that an adults). Settling them down in a cool room for a couple of hours will help them to regulate back to their normal temperature and avoid any sunstroke. EOC Services who offer air conditioning in Cambridge recommend the optimum air conditioning temperature to be around 23 degrees for hot days.

Covering up
While working on your golden complexion might seem like a priority while on holiday, it’s important to cover up at regular intervals throughout the day to give your skin a break from being exposed to the sun. For those times where staying out of the sunshine is unavoidable, make sure to cover up and encourage your children to wear sun hats and t-shirts whilst playing around the pool or in the sunshine. Furthermore, where possible, encourage them to sit in the shade for regular intervals throughout the day.

Family Travel Insurance
Whilst you will be doing everything in your power to prevent your children requiring any sort of emergency medical treatment during your holiday, accidents do happen. For this reason, it is vital to invest in some travel insurance (if you are holidaying abroad), just in case any of your family members do fall ill in the sun, or for any other reason. Whilst this is unlikely to be the case, it is better to be safe than sorry. Without insurance, and if someone in the family does fall ill, you could be faced with medical bills of hundreds and thousands of pounds.
