A 13-year-old boy from California in the US was suspended for school for sharing his lunch with a friend.

Kyle Bradford says that he did the good deed as it seemed the other boy “couldn’t get a normal lunch” and he was not hungry enough to eat his own lunch of chicken burrito.

The friend in question did not like the cheese sandwich supplied to him by the school cafeteria and was glad of Kyle’s offer.

However, once Kyle handed his lunch over, he was given a detention slip which read: “Kyle came through the line and got a lunch then while at the table gave it to another student. Policy is no sharing food, which he is fully aware of.”

Kyle mum, Sandy is angry with the detention her son received, explaining: “I feel very angry because he was doing the right thing and he was being kind and considerate and he was punished for it. By all means the school can teach them math and the arithmetic and physical education, but when it comes to morals and manners and compassion, I believe it needs to start at home with the parent.”

Superintendent of the school district, Tom Barnett, explained that the rule is in place for hygiene: “We have a policy that prohibits students from exchanging meals. Of course if students are concerned about other students not having enough to eat we would definitely want to consider that, but because of safety and liability we cannot allow students to actually exchange meals.”
