As part of a significant overhaul in the national curriculum, Welsh language campaigners have called on Education Minister Huw Lewis to ensure that all children leave school fluent in the Welsh language.

This comes ahead of a review made by Professor Graham Donaldson, the former chief inspector of education in Scotland, regarding Welsh assessment and curriculum which is due for publication on Wednesday.

The open letter, signed by Elaine Edwards, general secretary of Welsh Teacher' union Ucac and Tegwen Morrus, national director of women's voluntary group Merched y Wawr appeals to the minister to fulfil his ambition to see 'all learners in Wales- whether they attend Welsh-medium or English-medium schools, to speak Welsh confidently.'

Professor Donaldson has been praised for his role in developing the Scottish Government's curriculum reform programme and both women appreciate his input in the matter, saying: "We are extremely grateful that Professor Donaldson has already suggested that the Welsh language will be one of the founding principles in his recommendations for the new curriculum."

Commenting on the issue, a spokeswoman for the Welsh Government said: "We recognise that changes to Welsh second language are needed. We are committed to ensuring that changes to the curriculum reflect our commitment to improving standards in the Welsh second language teaching and learning so that we can equip young people with the skills they need to become competent Welsh speakers in the future."
