The career guidance systems in schools and colleges are set to be reviewed as part of the Action Plan for Education.

The aim of the plan is to make Ireland’s education system the greatest in Europe. The main reason for the review is to ensure that Irish students are getting the best support from guidance counsellors.

Minister for Education and Skills, Richard Bruton believes that pupils deserve relevant and high-quality support, “As Minister, I want to ensure that there are many pathways for people to achieve their ambitions through our education and training system and relevant, comprehensive career guidance is important to guiding people through these pathways.”

He explained that to have the best education system in Europe, we must provide strong career guidance support with the relevant information that will help students succeed in the future.

He hopes that this review will find any issues and amend them in a swift manner, so students have easy access to a decent support system, especially during their final years in school.

Liaising with a career guidance counsellor can help put youths at ease, especially those who may feel unsure about what they want to study in the future. It can also help inform students about their further education options, especially if they are feeling unsure about attending college.

Richard Bruton added, “I look forward to seeing the outcomes from this review, which is a priority if we are to make further progress in addressing the skills needs of individuals, enterprise and the economy."

What changes would you make to the career guidance system, mums?
