Every day there seems to be a new horror story emerging about someone developing a severe eye infection from their contact lenses.

And while the risks are there, with proper care who shouldn’t have any problems.

Here are five things you should always do:

1. Wash your hands first

Always wash your hands with warm soapy water and dry them thoroughly before you touch your lenses.

2. Avoid contact with water

Don’t wear your contacts in the shower, bath or the swimming pool and minimise the amount of water that goes near them.

3. Replace them accordingly

Make sure you replace your lenses according to your eye care professional – never wear them longer than prescribed.

4. Clean with proper solution

Always use the proper solution to clean your lenses – never use water.

5. Take proper care of your case

Clean your case with solution – not water – and let it air dry. Make sure you replace it at least once every three months.
