This morning saw Pakistani children return to school for the first time since Taliban gunmen massacred 150 of their classmates and teachers last month.

Heartbroken parents and teachers commented on the effect the terrifying attack had on their families following December's violence at the Army Public School in Peshawar.

One father spoke of his grief following the death of his wife, who worked as a teacher at the school, and said: "A hollowness in my life is getting greater. I am missing my wife."

The man's two children are also pupils at the school and he was devastated to learn that his youngest son was shot during the attack, but thankfully survived the brutal violence.

One teacher, whose son was killed during December's bloodshed, arrived at the school wearing black, but vowed to honour her child's memory by attempting to stay positive and focus on the future.

The heartbroken mother spoke of her intentions, saying: "I have come here because the other kids are also my kids. I will complete the dreams of my son, the dreams I had about my son, by teaching other students. I have chosen to get back to school instead of sitting at home and keep mourning."

Tighter security has been put in place in schools following the horrifying incident.
