If your little one is starting school at the end of the summer, you might be looking to sign them up for a summer camp to not only keep them amused, but also get them used to the school routine.

Understandably you might be feeling a little apprehensive if this is the first camp that you are sending them to, but the following will help you choose the right one.

1. Check the age category

Make sure the camp accepts young children - many only start from the age of five, but there are a number that will take them from four or even younger. Give the camp a ring if you are unsure.

2. Check supervision

When letting your young kids attend anything, it is vital you check that there is proper supervision for them at all times and that the student teacher ratio is adequate. A quick search of their website should be enough but a phone call will also help to settle any concerns.

3. What is your little one interested in

It is important you take note of your little one’s interests before booking. There is no point signing them up for sports if they love dancing and vice versa. While you will want them to try new things, you will also want your youngster to remember their first camp with positive memories so they won’t be put off going to another one!

4. Is your little one ready?

Even if they are already in preschool, that doesn’t mean your little one is going to like going to a camp, even if just for a few hours. Only you will know if your youngster is ready for something new – if you are unsure, try signing them up for a few hours a day to get them used to it.

5. Choosing full or half day

You will need to decide if your little one will be going for a full or half day, especially if you are looking at the camp as a childcare option. Nine to five camps can be long and draining for little kids, especially if they are going to be on the go for the whole time. Your little one may also need rest time, so check the camp’s schedule to see if it suits your son or daughter.
