One of the toughest skin problems to manage is oily skin. Products that remove oil can easily dry out your skin, leaving it flaky and irritated. Consequently, dry skin produces more oil to compensate. It can be a vicious circle! To combat your oily skin, use products that contain the ingredients Salicylic Acid, Glycolic Acid, or Benzoyl Peroxide.

Salicylic Acid
Salicylic Acid, sometimes call Hydroxy Acid, is great at removing oil and exfoliating the skin. It works by penetrating the pores to remove the dirt and dead skin cells that cause blockage. We recommend L'Oreal Paris Skin Genesis Pore Minimizing Gel Cleanser. Products with Salicylic Acid can be drying, so make sure that you only use it once a day.

Glycolic Acid
Another good ingredient for removing oil from the skin is Glycolic Acid, which is a form of Hydroxy Acid. Glycolic Acid is added to cleansers and works in the same way that Salicylic Acid works. The difference is that Glycolic Acid can also help fade dark spots caused by acne.

You’ll want to be especially careful using Glycolic Acid in combination with other skin treatments, such as acne cleansers with Benzoyl Peroxide. When used together, your skin may become very flaky and irritated. Combining products that contain Glycolic Acid and Salicylic Acid is considered safe, and does not irritate most skin types.

Benzoyl Peroxide
The most common ingredient in acne medicines and over the counter acne treatments is Benzoyl Peroxide, which effectively kills bacteria trapped in your pores to prevent breakouts. While Benzoyl Peroxide works well, it can be overly drying, even for oily skin. We like Clean & Clear Continuous Control Acne Cleanser Daily Formula which does contain Benzoyl Peroxide, but is gentle enough for daily use.
