There are some complications which can occur as a result of macular degeneration which include:
- Depression or anxiety, finding out you have a condition that affects your vision can be difficult to come to terms with. You should speak to your G.P. if you are struggling to complete every day tasks.
- Driving, you may no longer be able to drive as central vision is affected.
- Charles Bonnet syndrome. Approximately 12% of people with macular degeneration experience Charles Bonnet syndrome. Macular degeneration can prevent you from getting enough visual stimulation; as a result hallucinations can occur. It is important to speak to your G.P. if you experience hallucinations; they are not a sign of mental illness but rather a result of the problem with your vision.
