In very rare cases, Periorbital Cellulitis that is left untreated can develop into Orbital Cellulitis. This is a very serious condition which affects the eyeball itself and the structures within the orbit. This condition can affect your child’s vision and ability to move his eye. It usually causes the eye to bulge and in some cases the eye can swell shut. Orbital Cellulitis requires immediate medical attention, usually involving a MRI or CT scan and a hospital stay, so that antibiotics can be given intravenously.
If left untreated orbital cellulitis can cause permanent vision loss or neurological problems in children. This is quite rare but it is important that periorbital cellulitis receive medical attention quickly.
