Pester power describes when your child is constantly asking you for something and will try to wear you down until you give in.

While a lot of children use this approach to get what they want, there are ways that a parent can handle it.

Follow our tips to put an end to it:

Be aware of what starts it

Companies are aware of pester power and use it to their advantage, targeting their ads at children and young people. Try to reduce the number of ads that your little one sees on a daily basis.

Establish boundaries

Your child will constantly try to push boundaries so you need to make sure that they know who is in charge. Ensure they know what kind of behaviour you expect from them.

Explain your reasons

Always give a reason to why they can’t have a particular thing. For example, if it is too costly explain this to them. This should go a long way in trying to stop them asking for it over and over again.

Don’t feel guilty

Don’t buy them something because you feel guilty. The most precious thing that you can give your child is your time and they will benefit from this than material things.

Keep treats as treats

If your child is constantly pestering you to get something when you go shopping, either leave them at home or let them take a toy. Offer an incentive like a trip to their favourite playground if they are good to help keep their pestering at bay. Avoid buying things to keep them quiet - keep treats for special occasions.

Youngsters and teens can often put their parents in embarrassing and awkward situations in order to get what they want. However, it is important not to let your child get away with it as this will just encourage them to use it more and more.
