When we find out we are pregnant, we expect everything to go according to plan and for it to turn out exactly as we wanted. Unfortunately, sometimes things don’t go right and through no fault of your own your baby can be born with a disability or problem.

While there are plenty of tests these days that can determine if there is something wrong during pregnancy, it doesn’t make it any easier on the mum once baby arrives.

If you are struggling to cope, the following advice should help you feel better.

Don’t hide your emotions

Accept how you feel and be open and honest with family and friends. Whether you’re angry, sad or scared, acknowledging your feelings is a healthy thing to do. One day you might be happy, others frightened and frustrated - there is no right or wrong way to feel, instead deal with each emotion as it happens.

Seek support

You will probably be feeling stressed and confused about your family's and your baby’s future, so seek support from your family and GP, who will be able to help you get into the right networks.

Understand the issue

Make sure you take the time to get as much information as possible – knowledge is powerful in helping you and your family cope. Talk to doctors, friends and family and join support networks and online forums.

Give yourself time

It can be tough dealing with a diagnosis, so give yourself time to adjust and to accept. Even if your other half isn’t phased in any way, this doesn’t mean that you need to rush through your own emotions.

Get to know others in the same situation

Getting to know parents in the same situation will help you realise that you are not alone and that there are others who have gone through or are going through the same thing as you. Online forums are a great way to meet like-minded people and your GP can give you information on any support services in your area.

Enjoy your child

It can be hard not to focus in on their disability, but it’s important to remember that it is not the only aspect about your baby. Spend time cuddling, kissing and just being together.
