Should you suspect your baby has a blocked tear duct your baby’s paediatrician will first perform an eye examination to see if they are blocked.

The doctor will also perform a tear drainage test (fluorescein dye disappearance test). To test how your tears are draining, your G.P. will put one drop of a special dye in each eye. If there is a significant amount of dye left in the eye after five minutes of normal blinking then it will be diagnosed as a blocked tear duct.

Your G.P. may also flush a saline solution through the eye to check how it's draining.
