Generally, with time the tear duct will finish developing and will naturally develop. This normally happens within a few weeks after birth. However, in some babies it can take a few months. Most doctors advise waiting a few months to see if the problem resolves itself. If the tear duct is still blocked by 12 months of age then your baby’s G.P. or paediatrician may refer you to an ophthalmologist who in turn may recommend the tear duct is opened with a probe. This is performed under general anaesthetic and is quite a brief procedure. A small metal instrument is passed through the nasolacrimal duct which opens the membrane. This is usually not required. Many doctors suggest massage as the only form of treatment. To massage, gently pressure the outside of the nose a few times a day.
