It’s so important to encourage our children’s interests from an early age, and if you have a little – or not-so-little – one at home with a passion for food and writing, then we have the perfect competition for them.

The Guild of Food Writers and Pink Lady are teaming up for this year’s ‘Write It’ competition for young writers, offering them the opportunity of a lifetime!

Running for the best part of a decade, the Write It competition is encouraging children from three age groups – 10 and under, 11 to 14, and 15 to 18 – to capture one of their favourite food experiences on the page.

Each year, the Write It competition runs with a theme, and 2017’s is ‘Partnerships’; so, the subject matter could be your child’s favourite combination of foods, the idea of cooking or eating with friends and family – anything related to food pairings or partnerships.

As for the judging panel, it really is top class. Judges include the Guild’s President, Xanthe Clay; award-winning documentary maker and author Stefan Gates; as well as food writers Diana Henry and Felicity Cloake.

This is a wonderful opportunity for your child to embrace their passions for writing and food, and to get exposure with some of the top professionals in the industry.

Kate Hawkings, Chair of the Guild of Food Writers, said: “Many of our members have been writing about food since they were very young, and with this year’s theme, we hope to inspire children to do the same and write about their favourite food partnership.

“This might be sharing their experiences of cooking or eating with friends or family, or their ultimate food partnership such as apple crumble and custard, bacon and eggs, strawberries and cream, or perhaps something more unusual.”

Write It is now open for entries, but the closing date – April 30 – won’t be long approaching! So, if you have a budding food writer at home, be sure to fill them in!

This is such an exciting opportunity; we’re kind of gutted that we can’t send in a sneaky entry ourselves!
