A group of students from John Scottus secondary school in the south of the city unearthed a bag of live ammunition during a recent science trip to Herbert Park in Ballsbridge, Dublin 4.

The discovery was made while students searched bushes for insects in the popular public park during a recent school science trip.

The bag, which was discovered by students from the Donnybrook school last Monday, contained four live rounds of .303 bullets and two live 12-guage cartridges containing 28-gram shot loads.

Commenting on the shocking discovery, local councillor Paddy McCartan said: “A new pavilion and cafe are due to open in the park this week, and a lot of money has been invested in the area, so to think that ammunition has been found in Herbert Park is quite worrying.”

Despite the discovery, Mr. McCartan commended the police for their work in the area, saying: “Gardai have been doing a great job in the area to stamp out anti-social behaviour, but obviously the discovery of live ammunition is concerning, and it could be in relation to a paramilitary group or an organised crime gang.”

Speaking on behalf of the gardaí, a spokesperson confirmed they were currently investigating the incident and parents have been informed of their childrens' discovery.
