There is so much more to Christmas then simply being stressed out trying to buy the ‘perfect’ gift; it is also about charity and helping others around you. This year, show your children the true meaning of the holidays by teaching them how to be charitable – a skill set that they will take with them right through to adult life.

Help them choose a cause

Being charitable doesn’t mean you need to or are even able to help every single charity around, no matter how much you or your kids want to try. Rather, let your kids choose one that they would like to help, be it an animals’ charity, for kids, older people or any other cause they like. If they have an interest in who they want to help then they will be more willing to get out there and do something.

Set up a project

Help your child to set up a project in the name of their chosen charity. It could be anything from simply setting up a jar in their room where they put any loose change, volunteering or creating a fundraising event.

Talk about why it is important

Explain to your children about why being charitable is important – explain how others are less fortunate than them and that helping these people out is one of the most important things they can do. If you want them to fundraise for a cause make sure they understand where their money is going and who it is helping.

Be a good role model

There is no point telling your kids that they need to save some of their birthday money or give up their time to help others if you aren’t willing to do the same. Pop your change in a charity box, fundraise for a cause, take part in an event or volunteer – whatever you do do it because you care and want to make a difference. Remember, your child looks to you to see how to behave.

Help them get started

A natural disaster or a piece in the news about the charity is a great way to get started, however, you don’t need to wait for something like this to happen. Ask your child want interests them, for example if they love animals go for an animal shelter.
