Skin care professionals tout the benefits of exfoliating to remove dead skin cells and cleanse the skin from environmental impurities that clog pores and cause dull, lifeless looking skin. Many times, a dermatologist or esthetician will tell you that you need to purchase a commercial product to get the benefits of exfoliating. But, the cost of some of these commercial products can be prohibitive.

While exfoliator is certainly recommended for clear, smooth skin, purchasing expensive facial exfoliators is not a requirement. There are many exfoliating products that are inexpensive and can be found at any local pharmacy. A few of our favorites are Aveeno Skin Brightening Daily Scrub, Clean & Clear Morning Burst Oxygenating Facial Scrub, Neutrogena Fresh Foaming Scrub, and Oil of Olay Warming Deep Purifying Cleanser. All of these are affordable and will provide the same benefits as many of the expensive exfoliators.

You can also make your own exfoliator by using natural ingredients that come right out of your own kitchen.
  • Mix granulated sugar with a little warm water, or olive oil if you have dry skin. The sugar works to erode the build-up of dead skin cells, dirt and debris that collect on the skin.
  • Coffee grounds are another great ingredient to make a homemade exfoliant. Just mix the coffee grounds with warm water, olive oil, milk, or a natural over-the-counter moisturizer and massage on the skin in small circular motions.
  • Salt is often used to exfoliate. The salt granules work in the same way that the sugar or coffee grounds work. When using salt though, you must be extra careful to not get it in your eyes. You’ll also want to make sure that you did not just wax or shave as the salt has a tendency to sting.
  • Ground oatmeal is one of our favorite ingredients for homemade exfoliants. The oatmeal is gentle and good for the skin. Use a food processor to grind up the oatmeal, then add to your favorite moisturizer of creamy cleanser.
