In this modern age when technology is all around us and involved in almost everything we do, great strides have been made to incorporate it into the classroom.

However, is the increase of emphasis on technology actually benefitting our children? New research suggests that it may not.

According to a report from the US, over-reliance on technology could actually be detrimental to learning.

The report, released by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), stated: “Limited use of computers at school may be better than no use at all, but levels of computer use above the current…average are associated with significantly poorer results.”

“Students who use computers very frequently in school don’t outperform students who use them moderately, even when we modify for social background,” added OECD director, Andreas Schleicher.

Commenting on the overall results of the study, Schleicher added that doubts over technology’s positive impact upon education was ‘disappointing’.

“One interpretation of all this is that building deep, conceptual understanding and higher-order thinking requires intensive teacher-student interactions, and technology sometimes distracts from this valuable human engagement,” he said.
