Ever find yourself yelling at your kids for no reason other than they’ve caught you at a bad time? Or feeling irritable towards them more than you care to admit to? Well, you aren't alone.

As our lives become busier, us mums can struggle to keep our cool when things go wrong or when we are simply in a bad mood.

However, before you blame yourself, have a look at your lifestyle and make a few changes:

1. Put away your phone

You are more inclined to snap at your kids if they interrupt you while you are on your phone. To stop this, avoid having your mobile near you when you are with them, instead schedule them in during your day if you need it for work.

2. Exercise

If you are feeling stressed, you are more likely to shout or yell at your kids than you would be if you were more relaxed. One of the most effective ways to ease stress, apart from reducing your workload, is to exercise. A proven way to help you relax, a fast walk or a run two or three times a week will significantly reduce your stress levels.

3. Get some me-time

It is so important you try to get as much me-time as possible. Whether it’s a soak in the tub or a night out with friends once a month, you will feel better for it. Being with your kids day in and day out can be tiring and you need to be able to recuperate in order to function properly.

4. Pick up a hobby

Having something for yourself like a hobby can get you out of the house for a short while at least, and give you a bit of breathing space. It will also provide you with an easy release and give you space away from the home.

5. Put the kids to bed earlier

When you are up early and working, cooking and cleaning for the whole day, it can feel like you never get the chance to relax. So why not give yourself some extra time in the evenings by putting the kids to bed 30 minutes earlier? They will no doubt benefit from the early night and you will be able to read a book or indulge in TV before you go to sleep.
