Using the wrong hair brush won't necessarily mess up your hair-do, but using the right types of hair brushes will make it easier to get the best results. Finding the right hair brush for your hair and budget begins with choosing between natural and synthetic bristles.

Natural or Synthetic Bristles?
  • Natural bristle hair brushes cost a little more than synthetic bristle brushes because they are gentler on hair than synthetic brushes. People with dry hair will find natural bristle brushes especially effective at distributing natural oils through hair.
  • Synthetic bristle hair brushes are less expensive and are good for coarse hair and thick hair than natural bristle brushes, because the strong plastic bristles are better at removing tangles from hair. Just don't pull too hard with a synthetic brush because this will cause breakage and split ends.
  • Combination synthetic and natural bristle brushes combine the best of the types of hair brushes, and are great for normal hair.

What brushes do You Need?
  • Round hair brushes have bristles all the way around the cylindrical brush end and are best for adding body and forming loose curls when blow drying.
  • Paddle hair brushes are the regular flat slightly paddle-shaped brushes with bristles on the paddle-shaped end. Paddle hair brushes are best for removing tangles and spreading natural oils through hair follicles.
  • Teasing hair brushes are the long, thin hair brushes used to tease, or back-brush hair to add body and fullness to hairstyles.
