Keeping kids entertained during the school holiays can be difficult, not to mention expensive. However, there are a few things that you can do that are both fun, free and, for some, educational.

Museums
Art museums and natural history museums are great, inexpensive places to take your child but don’t expect to spend hours wandering around admiring the painting, sculptures and displays. Most museums will have free events on, especially during school holidays, so, before you head off, check times of any events they may have on.

Library
Just like the museum, your local library is bound to have events on for kids during the holidays. Most of these are free so check out your library’s website or bulletin board for upcoming events. They may be holding storytime, arts and crafts or a meet and greet with an author.

The park
The park is a great place to go to keep kids of all ages amused. Bring your child’s friends along, pack a picnic and set up for the day. You will be able to relax a little knowing that your kids are entertained for a couple of hours at least.

A local animal shelter
If you’ve got time on your hands and older kids to entertain, why not ring up your local animal shelter and ask if they need a helping hand. If they are in agreement, why not spend a few hours with your child helping out.

A hike/ walk
Get outdoors and use the holidays to spend time exploring and doing things you wouldn’t normally do. If your child can manage it, why not put on their boots, get the whole family together and head up the mountains. You don’t have to go all the way up but they will love the chance to explore a whole new area.

Head to the beach
The beach is full of cool and interesting things and it doesn’t have to be sunny to have fun. Wellies are a must and always supervise your child if they are climbing rocks or going anywhere near water.
