The garden is an abundance of fun and new things to be discovered. This weekend, get the gardening tools out and go create some great memories with your little one.

Get them their own tools
Get your big kid their own gardening tools as they will be easier for them to manage than the adult version. You can pick these up in any garden centre and it will also mean they can really get stuck in to help.

Give them own patch
If you are particularly fussy about your garden, give your son or daughter their very own patch or pot. Let them choose their own flowers or even vegetables to grow. Try to go for fast growing plants so they aren’t waiting around for ages for them to grow.

What to grow
Try to choose plants and flowers that are fun to grow. Snapdragons are fun, bright and look pretty cool. If you want to start from scratch, go for sunflowers seeds as they are pretty sturdy, so if you forget about them they should still manage to grow. Other easy to care for plants include tomatoes, pansies, marigolds and poppies.

Decorate with their crafts
Encourage your child to see the garden as an extension of the house. Get them to decorate plain pots with their artwork or encourage them to make wind chimes or other garden friendly things. This way, if they don’t have the patience for growing plants or weeding they will still be a part of the garden.

Be enthusiastic about it
Avoid making gardening seem like a chore. Make weeding fun but don’t end up spending the entire day doing it as it can get pretty boring. Be excited when plants start to grow and use any vegetables you grow in your cooking. Things you take for granted such as different colours on the petals, scents and texture are things that will excite kids. Discover and learn about the garden together.

Give them their own jobs
Kids take pride in their own work so let them have their own jobs. Depending on their age, give them a job that they will love. If your little one loves digging in dirt give them a job where they can embrace this love. The same goes for kids who aren’t fans of dirt.
