Plenty of children across the country will be looking forward to receiving their very first smartphone this Christmas. A whole new world for parents whose eldest is just old enough to own one, it can be a little daunting and even overwhelming ensuring your little one will be safe while using it.

To ensure that everyone is happy, have a read of these top five tips:

1. Write up a contract

It is so important you write up a contract BEFORE you give your child their new phone. Set out restrictions, usage terms and even periods when they’re not allowed have it on so that you are both clear on what is expected. Don’t forget to have consequences if they do break the rules.

2. Make use of ALL parental controls

You can restrict your child’s ability to download apps, use the camera and even access the internet. For most phones, you can do so in the general settings, but do talk to the network provider who will be able to guide you on what you are looking for individually.

3. Talk to your child

Ensure the gates of communication are open at all times, and make sure your child knows they can come to you if they do get in trouble. The internet can be a scary place and it is important your son or daughter knows that you will always be there, no matter what they are involved in.

4. Keep the phone in your name

When buying the phone, register it in your name and stick to a pre-pay device so there is no danger of them racking up a very expensive bill. This way you will receive all communication in relation to the phone and be in complete control at all times.

5. Make sure they know they are more important than the phone

Smartphones are very valuable items and are a commonly targeted by thieves; make sure your child knows how to be discreet with their mobile in public, and that if someone does take it that they know not to go after it.
