Andrew Morton, the biographer of Princess Diana, has revealed that when she was expecting Prince Harry, she kept the sex of the baby a secret from her husband.

In a re-issued biography, Morton revealed new details from secretly recorded interviews to The Mail Online about Harry’s birth and how one comment Prince Charles made stayed with her afterwards.

"His first comment was, 'Oh God, it’s a boy'. His second: 'And he's even got red hair' ",  Diana told Andrew during their interviews which took place in the 90s.

She revealed that Charles had been yearning for a daughter so she decided not to tell him the sex of the baby.

"I knew Harry was going to be a boy because I saw on the scan. Charles always wanted a girl. He wanted two children and he wanted a girl. I knew Harry was a boy and I didn’t tell him”.

When Diana said something “closed off” inside her when she heard the comments Charles made about his new son. She revealed their marriage hit the rocks after they had Harry.

"As Harry was born, it just went bang, our marriage: the whole thing went down the drain”, she said.

Unfortunately, Charles’ comments didn’t stop there, according to Morton.

Diana revealed: "Charles went to talk to my mother at Harry’s christening and said: 'We were so disappointed — we thought it would be a girl”.

"Mummy snapped his head off, saying: 'You should realise how lucky you are to have a child that’s normal' ".

However, despite his disappointment at not having a daughter, Diana went on to explain that Charles formed a close bond with his youngest son.

"Harry was a complete joy and is actually closer to his father than perhaps William at the moment," she said.

"Charles loved the nursery life and couldn’t wait to get back and do the bottle and everything.

"He was very good — he always came back and fed the baby. I breastfed William for three weeks and Harry for 11 weeks”.

Princess Diana split from Charles in 1996 but the couple continued to raise their children together until her untimely death in August 1997.

With the 20th anniversary of her death coming up on August 31, Morton has republished his famous book Diana: Her True Story.

Among other interesting revelations in the book, Diana recalled that William and Harry could have been called Arthur and Albert had she not insisted on choosing their names herself.

We think she made the right choice!
