Nowadays, it is common for family members to be spread out all over the world and while it does have the benefit of offering fantastic holiday destinations, it can be a little tricky, especially for kids to maintain any form of connection with them.

Whether you are abroad or you have family or friends that are living in a different country, here are five ways to help your big kid remain connected.

Encourage them to write

Whether it’s via email or using the traditional pen and paper, make sure your little one spends time writing to family and friends. An email once a week will help those who don't live nearby keep up to date on what’s happening and your youngster will feel like they are more involved.

Involve them in conversations

Make sure you talk about family members who you can’t see regularly on a daily basis to help your son or daughter keep them at the forefront of their mind. While they might not be able to see them every day this will help them to still feel like they are a part of their life.

Video call them regularly

Skype or FaceTime is a great way to stay connected with those far away. Most children aren’t fans of talking on the phone but being able to see the person they are talking to makes a whole world of difference.

Plenty of visits

Visits are a great way to catch up so head home when you can, invite family to stay with you or visit those away. Yearly trips or even sporadic ones are enough, especially if your little one has been in contact with them regularly. This way whether it is you or family abroad your youngster will be able to see how they live or show them their new life.

Put up pictures

Encourage those you live away from to send you regular pictures and vice versa. Display them in the family room or in your youngster's bedroom so that they become a familiar sight at home.
