They were one of the best-loved couples in the business, and fans were left shocked when news of their split initially broke.

Years on, however, and Meg Ryan has revealed that no one was more disheartened by her divorce from Dennis Quaid than her.

Opening up at the screening of her directorial debut, The Human Comedy, the 54-year-old revealed that the split – and its impact on their son Jack – inspired her work.

“I found the book when I got divorced, and my son was eight years old. And I was, like, lost. I thought it was going to be so hard – ‘Who is Jack going to look to? How is he going to be a man?’” she recalled, to Indiewire.

She added: “When I read it, I found that there were so many people in Homer’s community who are invested in his integrity. My first ‘in’ to the material was as a mom.”

Meg and Dennis got together after starring in three movies together in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s. They welcomed Jack a year after marrying, but the pair called time on their relationship in 2001.

Meg is also mum to 10-year-old Daisy True; her adopted daughter.
