The Home Office has come in for criticism in recent days for drawing up plans to weed out terrorist-like behaviour in children as part of the anti-terrorism strategy, Prevent.

The proposals, which aim to prevent the growth of terrorist-like ideals and behaviour suggest that adults in charge of children in a professional capacity should be alert to certain behaviour and “identify children at risk of being drawn into terrorism.”

Aware of the unpredictability of children’s behaviour and conversation, parents are concerned that nursery and school staff will be forced to report their children unnecessarily.

The plans which call for “senior management and governors to assess the risk of pupils being drawn into terrorism” have been met with negativity with many critics suggesting that it will turn adults who care for children into spies and will, on a practical level, be extremely difficult to implement.
