49-year-old Anastacia has done it all – she’s beaten cancer twice, gone on Strictly Come Dancing, been lauded by GQ for her philanthropic work, and sang her music to adoring fans all over the world. But some people still bug her about the one thing she hasn’t done: become a mother.
The I’m Outta Love singer set the record straight on the Bizarre Life podcast.
“Honey, all this works, don’t get it twisted,” Anastacia said, addressing the idea that her age or battle with cancer are the reasons she’s not having children, “My parts are working.”
The award-winning singer was diagnosed with breast cancer for the first time at 34. When the cancer returned, she decided to have a double mastectomy.
“I’m conscious of not having a child at this point in my life,” the singer-songwriter said, and confessed to wanting a child when she was younger.
However, now, Anastacia considers her career to be her 'baby', and owns her decision to not have children.
The electro-pop star clarified, “I choose not [to have kids], that’s what I mean. It’s an actual choice. I have to continually make that choice, or it could happen.”
“I don’t feel less of a woman by not having a child, I feel more of a woman by empowering myself to do what is right for me and not feel like I want to see me in a baby face,” she continued.
Anastacia was married to her bodyguard Wayne Newton, but is now single after divorcing him in 2010.
The Paid My Dues singer shared her secret desire to have a Tinder profile, but also worries that people would recognise her on the popular app.
When asked about how it feels to defy conventional ideas of what women her age are doing, Anastacia replied, “I’m not the one with, like, the two kids and a dog and a picket fence.”
And she's not slowing down, either! Her seventh studio album, Evolution, came out this September.
Go, Anastacia! She's not just topping charts - she's topping our hearts.
