According to emerging reports, a group of secondary school students and their teacher have been caught up in an avalanche which swept the French Alps this afternoon.

It has been established that of the group of 10 pupils and their teacher, one 14-year-old pupil has been declared dead, four are being treated for serious injuries while five are currently still missing.

Releasing details to the media, French police explained that the group, who are from Lyon, had been on a black run which had been closed to the public when the avalanche took place today.

It is understood that mountain rescue teams are currently searching the Deux Alpes region in Isére where the tragedy unfolded today.

Injured parties have been transferred to a hospital in Grenobel where medical teams are currently treating them.
