Now that your youngster is no longer a child, they will most likely come to you asking to do up their room. However, before you take a huge gulp in fear of forking out a fortune to do it up, here’s how you can do it on a tight budget:
Use what’s in there
Make use of whatever they have in there. You can easily give a chest of drawers a more grown up look with a bit of paint. This is a really inexpensive way of giving a room a new look.
Write a list
Write down what they want in the room. This could include storage, wardrobe, chest of drawers, desk, lamps, chairs or even a bigger bed. By writing it down you can think clearly about what you can and cannot afford.
Reuse other home furniture
Why not reuse furniture that is cluttering up other areas of your home. If you have a chair that is never really sat in, a side table that sits unused or few colourful throws going to waste ask if you tween wants them. Remember, one person’s rubbish is another person’s treasure.
Prioritise what they need it for
Prioritise what they need the room for. If they are going to be studying set up a study area complete with desk and light. You can pick up a desk fairly cheaply in most home stores or even ask family or friends if they have one going spare. If it is looking a little worse for wear, sand it down and give it a lick of paint.
Have a huge clear out
Strip the walls of baby paper, sort through the toys and discard or give away what they don’t play with put the rest into storage. Do the same with their clothes and other baby items. This will instantly give the room a more grownup feel and immediately de-clutter, giving you plenty of scope to allow their creative juices to flow.
