Advice for parents
What to tell your child
Accessing
unsuitable
material
Use a program that blocks access to certain websites. However, filters are not 100% effective and some are more effective than others.
Install a program that blocks emails and web pages that have unsuitable content.
If you come across any material that you are uncomfortable with, you should always tell a parent or a trusted adult.
Giving out personal information to strangers
Make sure that your child is aware that anything he posts online or in a text message could end up being public information.
Ensure that they understand that they should never give passwords, email addresses, their name, age, school or home address to anyone.
It’s very important to check with parents or a teacher before you provide anyone with personal details particularly when you don’t know the person.
Rules and
behaviour
If you have set out specific internet rules that your child breaks, it’s a good idea to block your child’s access to the internet.
You could remove the modem and attach it only when you are available to supervise.

Remember how we agreed on the rules and why we have the rules.
