She is chiefly known as the daughter of the most famous (or infamous, whichever you prefer) man in the United States right now, but Ivanka Trump is also a mother-of-three. And while the 35-year-old may enjoy an extremely privileged life, she – like so many others – has proven that postpartum depression does not discriminate.
In a preview from a new interview with chat show host Dr Oz, Ivanka – who is mum to six-year-old Arabella, three-year-old Joseph, and one-year-old Theodore – admitted that she battled the condition with each pregnancy.
“With each of my three children I had some level of postpartum [depression],” she revealed, in an interview that is set to air tomorrow.
When asked to clarify what she meant by ‘some level’, Ivanka – who now serves as an advisor to her father, Donald – got candid.
“It was a very challenging, emotional time for me because I felt like I was not living up to my potential as a parent or as an entrepreneur, and as an executive,” she explained.
“And I had had such easy pregnancies that, in some way, the juxtaposition hit me even harder.”
Her new career in politics aside, Ivanka has her own fashion range which is stocked online as well as in numerous high-end stores.
On her official website, she describes herself as “a wife, mother, sister and daughter – and passionate advocate for the education and empowerment of women and girls”.
When quizzed by Dr Oz as to why she is speaking out about her experience with mental health issues, she said she believes it’s important to be open about a topic that affects so many.
“It’s incredibly important and, look, I consider myself a very hard-charging person,” she began.
“I am ambitious, I’m passionate, I’m driven; but this is something that affects parents all over the country.”
Ivanka previously opened up about how she makes time for her children amid a hectic lifestyle.
“I try to carve out special time with each of them. Joseph loves playing with cars, Arabella could read with me for hours; I never loved baking until Arabella started cooking with me,” she said.
“Poor Theo – he’s always the one where they’re interrupting his quiet time with me.”
She may have her fair share of critics, but we’re glad that Ivanka is speaking out about her experience. What are your thoughts, mums?
