Halloween is a fun filled season that all the family can enjoy.

Nonetheless it is our children who delve deep into the realms of spooky coolness, and the competition is rife for the best costume.

However, while our kids are putting together their develish outfits, there are a couple of things you need to remember so that they can stay costume safe while gathering as much candy as possible.

1. Flame Awareness

Many costumes come with man-made fibres, which can be highly flammable. So always make sure to keep your kids away from fire hazards such as sparklers, candles and bonfires. Or an alternative is to opt for natural fabric like cotton if it is a worry.

2. Costume Fitting

Don't allow your child out if their costume does not properly fit. Sounds simple, but it is something which is often overlooked as we do our best to recycle Halloween outfits. The risk though lies within kids tripping over themselves, catching colds, or obscuring their vision! Make sure you have a needle and some thread close by just in case.

3. Avoid Capes

They may be a popular Halloween costume accessory, but for us, we're ditching the capes. Not alone do they pose as a tripping hazard for both parents and children alike, but they also pose as a choking risk, especially for small children.

4. Face Painting

Try to use face paints or oils more so than plastic masks as part of your kids' costumes. The masks can often obstruct children's vision, making it difficult for them to roam free while out on the trick or treat run. However - make sure to ALWAYS check the labels on paint and oil so as not to run the risk of allergies or irritation.

5. Reflective and Colour

We tend to associate Halloween costumes with dark colours such as black - however, where possible try and source light colours which makes the kids easily visible in the dark of the night. If the costume is black, add in some reflective gear like tape or stickers so they can always be seen.

6. Accessories

Make sure all costumes accessories such as swords, guns, lasers, wands, etc are safe. They should always be made of flexible material and as soft as possible. This way your children can have the most fun in the safest manner.

7. Contact Lenses

Don't ever allow the use of decorative contact lenses without seeking professional advice from an optician or eye care professional. Our eyes are sensitive and can suffer from irritation quite easily.
