About

A classic country house cocooned by acres of lush grounds and woodland, Cottesbrooke Hall in Northamptonshire is a Queen Ann mansion built back in 1702 which many believe to be the inspiration for Jane Austen’s Mansfield Park. Inside, portraits, bronzes, 18th century English and French furniture and fine porcelain set the tone but the biggest draw is the renowned Woolavington Collection of British Sporting Art, the best of its kind in Europe. The collection, started by Sir James Buchanan, the great grandfather of the present owner, features work by Ben Marshall, Sir John Frederick Herring Snr, Sir Alfred Munnings, John Ferneley Snr and George Stubbs. Outside, the formal gardens are crowned by vast 300-year-old cedars, double herbaceous borders and lily ponds. Don’t miss the lovely Wild Garden just across the park which is planted along the stream and makes for a delightful Sunday stroll.
