About
At the Buckinghamshire museum you will see rich materials about our collections. The County Museum looks after collections made by the Buckinghamshire Archaeological Society (BAS) and the County Council over the past 150 years and is the main centre for studying the material past of the county.
Don’t miss our Cubitt Car in its purpose built garage in the garden! Be sure to visit our Special exhibitions gallery – one of the loveliest and the largest in the region and always with something interesting and worthwhile to see.
While you are upstairs follow the signposts to the Tudor House – until the Tudor reformation it was the Guild hall of the Confraternity of the Blessed Virgin Mary and is restored to its original 15thc architectural splendour following major restoration work.
Downstairs the lower room of the Tudor House was remodelled for Georgian tastes in the mid-1700s; the garden side of the main corridor is the Georgian Room – one of the best Georgian stucco ceilings in Aylesbury and with a lovely outlook across the garden.
Our main displays are a ‘Touch of Bucks’ exploring the history of the County in fun interactive displays for every period. The approach is thematic so enjoy the woodland case, the Brickmaking displays or the lace room
The museum Curiousity Coffee shop serves ice creams, hot and cold drinks, cakes and light snacks all day and has a large garden area for fine weather. Our shop is stocked with a variety of Roald Dahl books and souvenirs, Country books and related local produce, household and other gift ware.
The Galleries
The ground floor includes the Touch of Bucks Gallery, the Aylesbury Gallery, the Victorian Room and the Special Exhibitions Gallery. The Art Gallery is upstairs, and can be reached by the lift or the main staircase. The Medieval Room is the only part of the museum that does not have flat access and cannot be reached via the lift.
Aylesbury is an hour by train from London Marylebone or 25 minutes off the M25 via the A41. We advise visitors to park in a town centre car park and then walk to the Museum. It is only a short, signposted walk from Market Square to the Museum, which is situated in the old part of the town, near St Mary’s Church.
