As we edge ever nearer to the end of January, you may feel your resolve slipping somewhat as you struggle to maintain the exercise routine you launched into with gusto at the start of the new year.

It's only normal that the novelty of gym classes and morning smoothies wear off eventually, but it's important to remember that consistency is key when it comes to exercise and nutrition plans, so don't fall at the first hurdle and give in to your desire to stay on the couch all evening when you know a quick spin on the bike or swing of a kettlebell will do you the world of good.

When an exercise class or evening run is the last thing you feel like doing, why not make the transition from your slippers to your trainers a little easier with five simple tips and tricks?

We swear they work, so just give them a try the next time you find yourself flailing!

1. Wash your face

You may think you're in no humour to sweat it out in a weights class, but you'll be surprised by the new lease of life you receive simply by splashing some water on your face.

Tie up your hair, wash off the day's make up, apply some moisturiser and marvel at the immediate difference it has to your energy levels and attitude,

2. Brush your teeth

If a recent meal has you craving pie more than planks, why not quickly remedy that issue with a quick dental hygiene check?

A thorough brushing followed by a swish of mouthwash will instantly remove cravings, leaving you feel minty fresh and ready to hit the gym.

3. Put on your gear

If the thought of leaving the house for an exercise class is bringing you out in a cold sweat, why not simply tell yourself that you're going to put on your exercise gear, but you're under no obligation to attend your class.

Amazingly though, simply lacing up those trainers and snapping yourself into your new leggings will instantly invigorate you, and you'll quickly realise you won't want to waste your brand new gear lounging around the house.

4. Do your maths

It's important to put your health and fitness obligations into perspective, so when you find yourself flailing, take a moment to do a little mental maths.

If your gym class is 30 minutes long, it's very helpful to remember that that figure is a mere 2% of your 24-hour day, and definitely time better spent sweating it out then texting during a boring television programme.

5. Promise yourself a reward

When you're really flagging on the willpower front, it's important to be kind to yourself and treat yourself how you might treat your children in the same position.

Promise yourself a small treat or simple reward for your post-class wind-down, and be sure to deliver on it because you do deserve it!
