Less than 2pc of children's packed lunches are meeting nutritional standards.

New research carried out by the University of Leeds reveals that a whopping 98pc of lunch boxes are failing to meet the nutritional standards expecting with extremely high levels of sugar, salt and saturated fats in each.

With only 20pc of those containing any type of vegetable, the research shows very little improvement in the last decade.

With roughly half of all lunch boxes containing snacks and sugary drinks, the findings highlight a real issue our children’s diets.

“We’ve got to do more to help parents and schools with this,” Jo Nicholas, Head of Research at the Children’s Food Trust told ITV.

“Putting a packed lunch policy in place can be tough but every school allowing packed lunches needs one if we’re going to make life easier for parents and give kids a consistent message.
