Rosie Dutton took on her local council when she realised that her daughter, who was born in August, would miss a full year of school due to admission rules.

Rosie, whose daughter was one of 250,000 kids who would miss out on education, felt that her daughter, Olivia, was not emotionally or physically ready to start school last September, as she had just turned four in August.

However, while a lot of schools in the UK allow kids born in the summer to attend school a year later, they would have to go straight to Year 1 - meaning they would miss out on the reception year.

Rosie took on the council to fight for her daughter’s place in the Reception year and it was revealed today that she won.

Talking about the fantastic result to the Birmingham Mail, the children’s worker said: “For the first time I’ve been able to talk to her about starting school with passion and excitement. We were dancing around her bedroom when we got the email telling us she had a reception place and the school we want. I am certain that the media pressure put on Staffordshire County Council and school had an influence, I am so grateful to the Birmingham Mail for its help.”

Not only did the 30-year-old win a landmark ruling she also managed to get her daughter into her top school choice – Heathfields Infants School in Tamworth.

However, the battle is not over as the mum-of-one revealed: “It’s something that will always be in the back of my mind, if we ever move to a different area or she moves to senior school, they could always insist she jumps up a year.”
