A mother in the States was left reeling recently when she learned her four-year-old son, Zayde, was being forced to write with his right hand, despite a natural inclination to use his left.

Alisha Sands reveals she was stunned to discover her son's teacher was forcing him to use his right hand on account of negative cultural connotations associated with the use of the left hand.

Recounting the moment she discovered Zayde had begun using his other hand, Alisha said: "We were just working with his homework and I had noticed he was using his right hand instead of his left."

Concerned her son was under the impression he must go against his natural inclination, Alisha contacted Oakes Elementary and outlined her concerns, but was shocked to realise her child has been encouraged to switch hands by his teacher.

Citing, in a letter sent to Alisha, that left-handed people were often deemed  "unlucky and inauspicious", Zayde's teacher then suggested that those same people were also linked to "the idea of wickedness."

While the teacher has yet to be disciplined following the wholly inappropriate correspondence, Oklahoma's Department of Education has insisted that it is currently investigating the matter.

Issuing a statement regarding the shocking case, they said: "It is deeply disturbing if the allegations are accurate. No young child should be made to feel shame because of the hand he or she favours."

With early days in school overwhelming enough under normal circumstances, our hearts go out to Zayde who was put under unnecessary extra pressure.
