Deciding to home-school your children is a personal choice, but allowing your children to decide when they want to attend school is a completely different story.

This is something that mum-of-six Claudia Ward learned after she was jailed for allowing her children to pick and choose when they went to class.

The single mother, from Cornwall in England, adopted an approach that she referred to as ‘flexi-schooling’, whereby she would allow her children to skip class on a regular basis. Her unique approach to schooling was founded on her belief that her children would learn ‘more on a beach that in a hot stuffy classroom’.

Claudia, who was jailed in 2012, has since expressed her remorse over her decision, telling her local newspaper: “When I spent my first night in the cell, the enormity of what I had done hit home.”

“I accepted that my views on education were not correct and everyone must adhere to the same rules, or there would be anarchy. It was the wake-up call I needed,” she continued, adding, “My ideas for education were always more outside the box and free-thinking.”

Claudia went on to serve 10 weeks of her 20-week jail term, with family members looking after the children.

Expressing her sincere regret in a candid interview this week, she said: “My children still have fun and go to the beach, but only after 3.30pm in the afternoon or on the weekend.”
