We have heard of some shocking school-related stories in recent times, but this latest report is absolutely tragic.

An 11-year-old Chinese pupil reportedly jumped to her death after being told off by her mum and teacher for not finishing her homework.

Young Yu Liao is reported to have jumped from the seventh storey balcony in the eastern Chinese province of Zhejing, following the telling-off from her mother.

The incident is believed to have arisen over work that Yu had been asked to complete over the weekend. When the 11-year-old returned to school the following week without the completed exercises, she was lectured by her teacher, who went on to call the girl’s mother in for a discussion on her academic performance.

The girl’s mother was said to have yelled at her in the school office, before taking the child home to get her to complete the work.

After finishing the work, and enduring another lecture from her parents, Yu is said to have leapt to her death from the balcony of her family home. Her family have since said that their daughter had no history of mental illness, nor had she ever shown previous suicidal tendencies.

Commenting after the incident, Yu’s shocked mother told local media: “I was really upset that my daughter who is usually very obedient did not do her homework as the teacher had instructed. I scolded her on the way home to make sure she didn’t repeat the same mistake again.”

Although Yu was rushed to hospital, doctors were not able to save her life.

Yu’s parents first found out about the incident when police knocked on their door. Yu’s mother has since been treated for shock, while the teacher involved is said to have fainted upon hearing the sad news.
