A mum has polarised opinion after posting photos on her Instagram page of her six-year old daughter rocking rainbow coloured hair and a side buzz cut.

Hairstylist Mary Thomaston’s little girl Lyra ‘badgered’ her for the look, so she gave in – on the proviso that her school said it was OK.

They did – and we have to say, we LOVE it!

“My very own baby unicorn,” wrote Mary on the finished look on her Instagram page. “She's been wanting this done for a while now. All her own ideas. I use all @manicpanicnyc to color my daughter’s hair. Don't worry folks it'll wash out. She wasn't harmed in the process. Just putting that out there since some people seem to be having a hard time with me coloring my child's hair. It’s hair… it’ll grow back!”

But of course it didn’t take long for the criticism to come pouring in, with some commenters saying Mary “poisoned” her daughter, and others adding that she was far too young for such a hairstyle.

“Really?” Mary responded. “Because when you're a grown-up with crazy-coloured hair people say such things are for kids. I say why not let them have fun while they're young!”

However, despite the criticism, Mary received an influx of positive comments from people lauding her for allowing Lyra to express herself.

“I just read the article on you letting your daughter chose her own hairstyle and I think it's wonderful!” said one commenter. “She looks amazing and I love it. Kids should be themselves and never have to live in some box. Better to be unique and to not follow the crowd. #AmazingMom

While another added: “Good on you for allowing your daughter's own beautiful, creative uniqueness to shine! The world needs more non-conformists, like the two of you, who push and break the boundaries. Society's 'norm' sucks! Yourself and your wonderful little girl ROCK!”

“Why are there people hating on this little girl and her hair and the mom, defended another commenter. “LEAVE IT BE. She isn't your kid, and I'm sure the mom doesn't care what you say. Just scroll through and stop wasting your time criticising the way a mom allows her children to be creative and express themselves?”

What do you think of Lyra's hair mums? Is she too young? Or do you think she's rocking it?
