A mum from the Marshall Islands wrote a beautifully powerful poem for her daughter and read it to world leaders at this year’s UN Climate Summit.

Kathy Jetnil-Kijiner first opened with a statement about her homeland before reading out her poem, called Dear Matafele Peinem which is a promise to her infant daughter that their home will not be destroyed if all of the right steps are taken.

The poem went viral quickly and highlights the importance of protecting this world for our children as well as allowing us not to forget about those lands that may be in great danger if nothing is done to protect them.

Kathy’s poem was so powerful at the summit that it brought many world leaders to tears.

When she had finished her poem, her little daughter, to whom the poem is written, makes an appearance on stage.
