There have been a number of concerning school incidents flagged by parents within the past few months, but we would imagine that this one will prove divisive.

A group of mums in the US have slammed their children’s elementary school over what they have branded an ‘inappropriate’ art project.

The parents are seemingly unhappy that their kids, fifth grade students at Alpine Elementary in California, were recently asked to paint wine and beer glasses.

The art project was ommissioned as part of an annual fundraiser, which is set to take place at the school early next month.

One parent who received an invitation to the event, the Alpine Education Foundation gala, told local media that the very concept of the art project was sending their children a ‘mixed message’.

“We spend so much time telling our kids, ‘Don’t do drugs and alcohol’, and here we have young, impressionable children painting on wine glasses,” she said.

The president of the volunteer group in charge of the gala, Colin Campbell, admitted that he had not thought the project through.

“I look at the medium of the art itself and see the beauty of it. However, I understand why there would be concern and controversy involved and I’m sorry for that,” said Mr Campbell.

The school’s superintendent also apologised today, saying that a lapse in judgment had played a role.
