Myopia is a vision problem that is experienced by up to one third of the population. People who suffer from myopia have difficulty reading from a blackboard or seeing road signs but can see objects perfectly up close. Myopia can be treated through the prescription of glasses or contact lenses. Children often suffer from a progressive form of myopia which tends to get worse as they progress through childhood but it usually stabilises by the time they are in their twenties.

In people with myopia, the eyeball is slightly longer, from back to front, than normal. Light rays which make up the images you see, focus in front of, rather than directly on the retina, the light sensitive part of the eye. Light entering the eye is focused incorrectly, making distant objects appear blurred. Myopia is a type of refractive error in the eye.
