As many of you will know, especially after becoming a mum, as we get older it gets more and more difficult to catch those elusive eight hours’ worth of sleep. Whether this is down to stress or long working hours both within and outside of the home, here are some natural remedies that may help you in the pursuit of a good night’s sleep.

1. Valerian

A number of studies have shown that Valerian, a grassland plant, can reduce the amount of time it takes to fall asleep, and also improve the quality of your rest. This is available in your local pharmacy, but you may want to consult with your doctor regarding dosage and use.

2. Acupuncture

One of the oldest healing practices in the world, acupuncture is used to treat a number of ailments; lack of ability to sleep being one of them. The insertion of needless triggers the release of substances like melatonin into your system, which helps you to fall, and remain, asleep.

3. Melatonin

Speaking of melatonin, this hormone plays a major role in helping us to fall asleep. Increasing your level of melatonin by consuming foods such as oats, cherries and bananas – which help to produce the chemical – will help to relax you ahead of your night’s sleep.

4. Chamomile

One of the most popular natural remedies is chamomile, and people all over the world swear by it. Sipping on a soothing cup of chamomile tea before bed will relax your muscles and help you to easily fall asleep.

5. Exercise

Is there anything that exercise is not beneficial for? Regular exercise (not right before bed) will not only give you more energy while you’re awake during the day, but it is proven to make you sleep more soundly.
